Blue Note

The Blue Note series features creations produced with the cyanotype technique, also known as blueprint. The cyanotype process was one of the first technologies used to create intense Prusian-blue photographic images, through the exposure to sunlight.

ROOTS AND WINGS

The "Roots and Wings" series comprises three distinct artworks. Inspired by Frederik van Eeden's book "De kleine Johannes" and Denis Waitley's poem "Roots and Wings," these pieces showcase a blend of mixed techniques. Each canvas incorporates photography, paper sculptures, and painting to create a unique visual experience.

If I had two wishes, I know what they would be,

I'd wish for Roots to cling to, and Wings to set me free; Roots of inner values, like rings with a tree,

and Wings of independence to seek my destiny.

Roots to hold forever to keep me safe and strong,

To let me know you love me, when I've done something wrong;

To show me by example, and help me learn to choose,

To take those actions every day to win instead of lose.

Just be there when I need you, to tell me it's all right,

To face my fear of falling when I test my wings in flight; Don't make my life too easy, it's better if I try,

And fail and get back up myself, so I can learn to fly.

If I had two wishes, and two were alI had,

And they could be granted, by my Mom and Dad;

I wouldn't ask for money or any store-bought things.

The greatest gifts I'd ask for are simply Roots and Wings.

OPEN YOUR INNER EYES

Open your Inner Eyes is a vibrant tribute to the limitless imagination that lies within all of us, if we look past the obvious.

Similar to how planets develop from a dense disc of gas and dust encircling young stars, our thoughts are created from an inexhaustible number of building blocks. Our thought foundation is continuously enriched and revitalized. Every external experience that affects us is absorbed, stored in our memory, or instantly utilized as the basis for fresh ideas. Within our minds, we have the liberty to continuously create, modify, deconstruct, and rebuild ideas. Motion is essential for facilitating experiences, fostering understanding, and exploring fresh perspectives and alternative truths. It forms the basis of our growth and knows no bounds. Remaining stagnant is not a viable option.

Open your Inner Eyes is Frederike Fennema's graduation series for the Photo Academy Amsterdam in 2024.
